At BarCamp NorthEast
May 24th, 2008 Posted in EventsAfter some initial trepidation and curiosity about what it would be like, my time at BarCamp NorthEast is almost done. There’s been a wide variety of sessions and topics so far, and I’ve been to slots about:
- Representing Graph structures in Python using RDFLib [Tom Morris]
- A look at issues surrounding technology and civil liberties issues [Glyn Wintle of Open Rights Group]
- Cross-browser styling techniques in CSS without conditional comments [Jon Sidnell of Adject Media :)]
- A guide to making viral content that isn’t rubbish [Tom Scott]
- Group discussion about mind hacks that work for us [Intro'd by Tara Hunt]
There’s not been a boring session yet, possibly barring my one, which at least wasn’t boring for me. It was more exposing than anything else, as I was presenting a technique that (as far as I know) is original to myself and is the first time it’s been shown to people outside the day-job. It seemed to go down well, and at least one person said they would have a go at using it where they are! I’m going to post something somewhere detailing what I presented, but in the mean time you can see the demo page I made specially for the day at http://adjectmedia.com/barcamp/.
Wherever you are, if you hear of a BarCamp event happening, get yourself along. It’s not hype - you really will meet interesting people, hear a load of fascinating things and generally have a good time. My only regret is that I can’t stay the night - I’ve got to be on a 9:10 train back to Hexham tonight.
